AFP is a protein normally produced by the liver. In adults, raised AFP may indicate liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma), germ cell tumours, or other liver diseases such as cirrhosis and hepatitis.

Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP)

CEA is a glycoprotein involved in cell adhesion. Levels may increase in cancers of the colon, rectum, stomach, pancreas, lung, and breast, but can also be mildly elevated in smokers or people with benign conditions like inflammation or infection.

Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA)

CA 125 is a protein found in the lining of the female reproductive tract. Elevated levels are often linked with ovarian cancer, but can also occur in endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, and during menstruation or pregnancy.

CA 15-3 is a protein shed by breast cancer cells. Most commonly used to monitor breast cancer progression, recurrence, or response to treatment, rather than as a standalone diagnostic marker.

CA 19-9 is a carbohydrate antigen associated with pancreatic cancer and cancers of the bile ducts and gastrointestinal tract. Levels can also rise in gallstones, pancreatitis, and other non-cancerous digestive conditions.

EBV is a common herpesvirus linked to certain cancers, including nasopharyngeal carcinoma, Hodgkin lymphoma, and gastric cancer. Serology testing can help identify previous exposure or active infection that may contribute to tumour development.

FOB detects hidden blood in stool samples, which can be an early sign of colorectal cancer, polyps, ulcers, or gastrointestinal bleeding. It’s a widely used screening tool for bowel health.
